The Indonesian government and the International Football Federation (FIFA) have agreed to ensure that the FIFA U-20 World Cup match, which will be held in Indonesia in 2023, can run well. This was stated by President Joko Widodo after meeting with FIFA President Giovani Vicenzo Infantino or Gianni Infantino at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

“The government and FIFA have also agreed to ensure that the FIFA U-20 World Cup matches in Indonesia can run well. All aspects of preparation to implementation must be ensured to run according to FIFA standards and be handled properly and professionally,” said President Jokowi.

On the same occasion, the FIFA President mentioned that the FIFA U-20 World Cup is the most important competition for men’s football after the World Cup, which will soon be held in Qatar from November 20, 2022. For this reason, the FIFA President continued, the best stadiums are needed so that matches can be played. Going well so that it can become an arena to show the image of Indonesia to the world.

“The image of Indonesia in the eyes of the world is not a country that has a tragedy in its stadium, but a country that has a vision for the future, has a young population who loves football, and a country that wants to celebrate and present football to the world,” said the FIFA President.

Furthermore, President Gianni considered Indonesia a football country, a country with a population of nearly 300 million who loves football. For this reason, FIFA and the Indonesian government agreed to work together and focus on improving a number of things, including stadium operations.

“We agreed to work together to focus on the operation of the existing stadiums, as well as focus on the stadiums themselves. Then also to the supporters, the behavior of the supporters, doing football projects for schools, we will manage it together with the government,” he explained.

“Then also about the stadium infrastructure needs to be considered because the tragedy that occurred (at the Kanjuruhan Stadium) is also related to infrastructure. Therefore, we will bring football experts from us, and we will help and ensure Indonesia shines in the local football scene,” added the FIFA President.

The FIFA president also said that the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia would be a unique opportunity to promote Indonesia for the future. The FIFA president also wants to ensure that Indonesia is strong not only from an economic point of view but also from a football perspective.

“Starting from now until the tournament later, until after the World Cup, we will ensure that Indonesia is not only a strong country from an economic point of view by holding the G20 meeting but also becomes the center of football in the region, and from here will make football continue to grow. Around the world,” he said.
